Agile Learning Lesson 4: Accommodate the Needs of Modern Learners

This article is the last part of our series: Learning Lessons from Stanley Cup and Super Bowl Champions. Previous piece in this series: Lesson 3: Make It Fast and Easy to Create Fresh Learning.

Millennials are no longer just a part of the workforce. They are the workforce.

56% of today’s workers are millennials, and that number will grow to 75% in the next 10 years. Millennials want to engage with work in a different way than past generations. And these different expectations extend to their learning.

Just ask Jeff Snead, General Manager of the L.A. Rams: “The next frontier in football is understanding the mind and figuring out how you can test and teach.”

The Rams sought to understand the learning needs of their millennial players. They realized that attention spans are shorter than ever, and that players prefer to learn on the mobile device that’s always with them.

Introduction
What Does Your Organization Have in Common with Elite Sports Teams?

Agile Learning: How Elite Sports Teams Make their Training Fast, Focused, and Flexible

Lesson 1: Focus training on the knowledge specific to your team

Lesson 2: Start with an assessment to focus your training

Lesson 3: Make it fast and easy to create fresh learning

Lesson 4: Accommodate the needs of modern learners

“Mike Sullivan of the Pittsburgh Penguins reached the same conclusion. It’s all about short bits of information that we could push out to our guys,” he explained. “They’re all on their iPhones as it is. That’s the generation.”

The Penguins used Learn to Win to distribute short, focused microlearning modules to players on mobile. Sullivan found that, using Learn to Win, his players didn’t just complete their training, but they engaged enthusiastically in the process.

“We’d push out quizzes to their phones, and we found that we didn’t have to make them mandatory. They were having fun with them and doing them of their own volition, on their own time,”  said Sullivan. “It’s amazing how powerful that aspect is, when they’re investing in their own learning process.

To ensure your own employees engage in the learning process, you need to meet them where they are.

That means designing for short attention spans, implementing microlearning, and implementing gamification and social elements.

Learn to Win makes it easy for your team to train in the flow of work. Your learners can engage for a few minutes at a time, on the device that’s always with them. We designed our mobile-first product for the generation that grew up on Instagram, so you can maximize your team’s engagement in the learning process.

When you make learning easy, fast, and fun, your team will get better, faster.
